Hi everyone, I am hoping I could get some advice. I am Canadian living in Belgium with my Belgian husband. We are planning on moving back to Canada, and I am filling out the forms for family sponsorship.
My first question is, how does it work to sponsor our baby? Do I need to wait until she is born then fill out a sponsorship for her too? I am worried we will have to wait another year for her papers, since we are eager to move to Canada as soon as possible. Another possibility is to give birth to her in Canada, the problem is I am no longer covered by OHIP and paying out of pocket is out of the question. What would be the best thing to do?
A) have our baby here and apply for her papers
- if this is the best option, how long would I have to wait until we get her papers to come to Canada?
B) have our baby in Canada
- if this is the best option, does anyone know any private health care providers that cover pregnancy and delivery?
That's a good question. I did not really think of it. It is true that since I am Canadian (born and raised in Canada) our daughter can acquire Canadian citizenship. I suppose that would be the best way to go.

It's the only way to go. You can't sponsor a child who is already Canadian by descent, so once they are born just immediately apply for their citizenship certificate.
The child will NOT be included as dependent in your PR app. They are just listed on the "other family info" form. So you will just be applying to sponsor your husband for PR only.

Thank you for reply! That makes the process a lot easier, I suppose we will just have to wait for her to be born in order to apply for her Canadian citizenship certificate before we move to Canada.

Yes, unless you wanted to deliver the baby in Canada. However as you noted, there will be a 3 month wait for OHIP so you'd need to pay all pregnancy/delivery related costs during this time out of pocket. And since you're already pregnant, private insurance for pregnancy/delivery does not exist (how would an insurer make money on a policy where it's guaranteed they will need to pay out on it).
