I have just been told that I need a police check from Canada for my wife to be able to sponsor me?!
I'm applying for my UK police check today and having my medical next Thursday. And we wanted to apply by the end of August.
I live in uk but spent 3 months in canada last summer and then been over another 5/6 times probably amounting to over 6 months. Do I need a police certificate from Canada?

You don't need a police check. The 6 months applies only if you have been in Canada for a period over 6 months straight. So if you had stayed here on your visitor visa, and extended it to stay longer, then yes. But in your case, no.

I presume their "No" just means that you don't need it upfront. But how many people do get asked for the Canadian police check during the application? We sent our application recently, and just came across the wait times for a Canadian police check - scary (although it seems the wait time doesn't apply if the RCMP didn't previously have your prints on file at all).

Actually we got asked for one. My partner lived here for 1.5 years. We were very surprised to be asked and it cost us a lot of money to get it done fast since he was back in the US. I'd say get it done if you are in Canada its cheap and easy then.
Hmm. My wife has been here for one year so maybe we should get that prepared in advance, just in case. After all, I did spend extra money couriering our application just to save a few days.
