So my husband has been living with me in Sweden for two years and now we are moving to Canada at the end of September. What does he need to think about as a returning resident? How does it work in customs? Does he need to declare everything he is bringing with him? He's not bringing anything "big" or expensive with him, just clothes, his xbox and a laptop (they were both purchased in Canada but we dont have the receipt). Does he need to pay taxes on this or is it only over a surtain amount?

Given that he has been out of Canada for over a year, he will be permitted to bring everything back without paying any taxes or duties. He should make a list of what he is bringing back (forms and details available here: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5113-eng.html#s4x1). This is more for his benefit as if he ever travels outside of Canada with these goods, he has evidence that he does not need to pay taxes on them when returning.
