Thanks in advance. I'm asking because of my wife. Her parents met at college in Canada. They lived in Canada until a month before her birth. They went down to Massachusetts for the birth. Her mom and her lived there the first month then came back to Canada and never lived there again. She now works for the Canadian federal government so I have a few questions: she never had a US passport so is she a citizen there even though she is here ? By swearing her allegiance to the Canadian federal government does that not constitute a loss of US citizenship (assuming she had it) ? Are our children, both born in Canada, considered US citizens? Thank you
She is a Canadian citizen since her mother is a Canadian citizen by birth. She is a US citizen by virtue of being born in the US. No issues keeping her both her Canadian and US citizenship.
It doesn't sound like her children are entitled to US citizenship since she didn't live in the US long enough to transfer this benefit to them.
There's actually no difference between the two. Again, expect years and certainly thousands of dollars. Here's a good article that covers the confusion people seem to have where they believe there's an easy way to get rid of US citizenship: http://www.citizenshipsolutions.ca/2015/03/03/renunciation-is-one-form-of-relinquishment-its-not-the-form-of-relinquishment-but-the-time-of-relinquishment/
