I sent my passport through canadapost and its current online tracking status says item was attempted to be delivered and is currently available at a post office for pick up. The package was addressed to CIC's PO BOX number so the status saying an attempt was made to deliver but not delivered doesn't actually make sense to me. Has anybody else faced similar situation? Do you think it's a valid status? Also I don't CIC is going to pick it up from post office. I hope canadapost is not screwing it up for me this time after a long wait with CIC.
Canadapost is one of the worst postal services in the world. That being said, their tracking system does not update regularly. So probably they have already sent the passport, but still showing old status.
You can email to CPP-Ottawa, and ask, if they have received your passport... They can answer the same day (just email it couple of days after, they need some time to open the envelope)

I had a similar status and all it means is that your package has reached the PO box. In my case, the package was 'ready for pick up' on the 8th of Jan and on the 9th, it was 'out for delivery' and was delivered around noon.
Give it one more day and check back on Monday afternoon

It's the same for one of my friend. He contacted canadapost and he was told, it would have got delivered but since the destination is PO box, nobody would have signed for it and hence the status would not change.

My friend that is the problem when we send to the PO box address. Xpresspost is just like a courier. I had sent to the Courier address and it was signed and received safely. So I think its better to pay for the signature on delivery and sending to the courier address.
