No, you cannot leave Canada for 4-5 months. As a PR, you are required to live in Canada throughout the entire process. You may leave for a few weeks at a time, a few times a year, but anything more than that and you risk the sponsorship application being cancelled.
Agreed. Go ahead and visit your wife for 2-3 weeks. If you leave for a few months then you should expect the application to be refused for failing to live in Canada.
my partner is Canadian citizen, and just after sending our application we want to go to Poland to visit my family etc. it will be around 3-4 weeks, but I hope as he is citizen, this rule does not apply, does it?
and what if the sponsor isnt a canadian citizen .. i want to visit my husband next year and i am a permanent resident .. can i travel out of canada for three weeks
If you are a Canadian citizen, you may sponsor a spouse, a common-law partner or conjugal partner, or a dependent child who has no children of his or her own. However, you must demonstrate that you will live in Canada when the sponsored person becomes a permanent resident.
Note: Permanent residents residing abroad may not sponsor from outside of Canada. Canadian citizens travelling as tourists are not considered to be residing abroad.
yeah i am sponsoring my husband from canada and im currently living in canada . So while the application is in process it doesn't say you cant travel after sponsoring or if it is still in the process
The rule applies for the entire period the application is being processed (from beginning to when your spouse received the PR visa). Again, you can travel - but limit your trips to 3 weeks.

Basically you have to convince CIC that you are living in Canada during the whole process. If you are gone for long lengths of time, they may suspect that you are actually living abroad. Even if you can convince them that you are not, it can cause complications with your application and cause delays
