I am a Canadian citizen, I was born there (my parents are British though), although I have not lived there since I was a child (my parents decided to move back to the UK). I have dual Canadian/British nationality. My Canadian passport has expired, although I assume I can just reapply for that when I'm ready.

My husband is British.

We have a son who is also British, although my understanding is that he is entitled to apply for Canadian citizenship because of my status.

We are in the very early stages of talking about a move to Canada. My husband has his own company, which was mainly set up to allow him to invoice his main 'employer', which is a company on the West Coast of the USA. We are a little fed up of the constant battle with the 8 hour time difference, so want to seriously explore the idea of a permanent move. I run my own business too, although this could not be moved to Canada very easily.

Ok, so I am assuming that I can move back to Canada if I wish, without any major problem (please correct me if I am wrong here!). However, I am unsure whether I can assume that I can take my husband and son, or whether it is somewhat more complex than that.

Any advice you can give would be great

1. You apply for proof of citizenship for the son, once he has that you can apply for a Canadian passport, so no problems for him. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof.asp
2. You will have to sponsor your spouse, as a Canadian citizen you can do that while residing abroad. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/fc.asp
3, You will need to include a statement as to your plans to re-settle in Canada, work, accommodation, schooling.

Thank you so much PMM that is really helpful. :)

I haven't so far been able to find anything that says you have to provide proof of income. Is this something you have to do?

My husband's company can basically be moved anywhere as it's run on a virtual basis. The income from that won't change for the worse wherever he is, because it all comes from the USA, so isn't dependant upon a local market. My situation is rather different as my own business can't just be moved, or if it was moved it would be like starting again from scratch, income wise. So I would be intending to find something else in Canada.

However, our household income wouldn't be adversely affected, at least not for long, and as we own our home in the UK outright, we're in a pretty strong position. I just worry that it would make it complicated to be a sponsor unless I have a job already organised in Canada, as the only proof of income is effectively my husband's unless I become a partner in his business (which isn't impossible).

Sorry that got very waffly :-[ :)

Hey go and have a look at this link, http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/thread-for-outland-london-uk-applications-t49436.0.html.
It will give you all the information that you need.
I am in the same position as you, my husband is canadian and i am British.
We have all the kids Canadian passports now and my sponsorship have been approved and we move next Thursday. We are moving over all together.
They don't ask for proof of income just proof that we are planing on moving when you are aproved.
Go have a look at the link hopefully it will give you more of an insight on the steps you have to take :)
