Hello everyone,

I recently submitted my PGWP application and I was looking to know if I am allowed to work either full-time or part-time (while waiting for a decision to be made) considering the fact that I was a part-time student for a semester (due to medical reasons which I explained in my PGWP application). I ask because I was just told by an immigration consultant at my university that since I was a part-time student for a semester, I cannot work until a decision is made regarding my PGWP. The consultant specifically referred to the second bullet point below. Could someone kindly clarify this for me? Is it really the case that I cannot work until a decision is made regarding my PGWP?

"Students who have completed their program of study are allowed to work (under paragraph 186(w) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations [IRPR]) while they are waiting for a decision on their post-graduation work permit application, provided they meet all of the following criteria:

  • they are or were holders of a valid study permit at the time of the post-graduation work permit application
  • they were a full-time student enrolled at a DLI in a post-secondary academic, vocational or professional training program
  • they were authorized to work off-campus without a work permit
  • they did not exceed the allowable hours of work"

I think you should listen to the immigration consultant. Don't add more issues to your case. There's no guarantee that you'll get a PGWP either.
