I heard that in general it is not a good idea to leave Canada for more than 6 months as we loose out on many benefits. What are your thoughts on this.

You may lose your health coverage and need to reapply. There are residency obligations that you need to meet to qualify even if you have a valid provincial health card. If you have not met your residency requirement and leave Canada for 6 months you could be asked to pay back any services you have already received. You will also have to contact CRA to determine whether you will still be a resident for tax purposes if you leave Canada for 6 months. Depending on the answer how you are paid may need to change. Will you still be keeping a home in Canada?
