Generally not recommended to arrive on a study permit more than a couple of months before classes start plus cannot do any actual work until classes start.
Nobody here can guarantee of course whether arriving so early even if you have funds will not get some extra attention from CBSA.
Others will need to comment about the legality of research in conjunction with supervisor before official class start date.

No you cannot work before classes start as that would be illegal work. This is clearly stated on the CIC website that you must be in full time education to be able to work which you would not be until classes start
This is why if anyone arrives early they need to be able to show if asked by CBSA that they can support themselves financially without working
If you will receive any renumeration for working on research before Sept, it would be classed as illegal work because you would be doing it before your classes actually start. If it is completely unpaid, then you should be fine.
Your wife is not allowed to work before you actually start class either.

Expect to be asked to show proof that you can support yourself without income at the airport. Others were refused entry and sent home. They had to return again closer to the beginning of classes.
