Can a US citizen live in Canada and work in the US?

My boyfriend and I are hoping to make the move to live together before getting married. I am Canadian and he is American, and right now just visit each other on weekends as we live approx 1.5 hours away.

He would like to move here, as I own my own home, and his work is a commutable distance from my home. However, we have no idea where to begin the process. I've been reading a lot about Permanent Residency, which I believe he will have to start once actually living in Canada with me. He has never had problems crossing the border on weekends to visit, but I am worried that we could run into issues once he is going back and forth every day. Is there a certain VISA he can apply for to live in Canada, yet still work Monday to Friday in the US?

He cannot live in Canada based on being a US citizen. If he attempts to live in Canada as a visitor and cross over into the US to work daily, then yes - he should assume that he will run into issues sooner or later and have problems entering the country.

He needs to obtain PR (permanent residency) in order to be able to live in Canada. You can sponsor him for PR once you are either married or common law (common law means you have lived together continuously for at least 1 full year). I would sponsor him, however we want to live together before we are married, and its impossible to gain common-law status if he can't be living here. Can he still apply through the skilled worker program if he is not planning on working in Canada?

Yes - he can apply through the skilled worker program if he's not planning on working in Canada.
