Hi, one of my family member is scheduled for bariatric surgery to loose weight in India(Indian Citizen) due to joint pain. But i wanted to know can this surgery stop medical clearance by medical officers for PR? We haven't applied in the pool yet as we are waiting for ECA. Has anyone you know got medical clearance after bariatric surgery for PR?
Though the health of the applicant would drastically improve after surgery. would medical officers ask and listen to reason for surgery or would just deny it completely.
what should we do? cancel the surgery or go on with it? Any advice from seniors would be much appreciated.
1. Excessive cost - If your continuing treatment will cost more than ~$19,000 a year. Cancer treatment can easily exceed this, for example.

3. Danger to public safety
Obviously 2 & 3 don't apply. Find out from the doctor what the post surgery costs will be. As I understand it (I'm not a doctor), the costs should be nowhere close to $19,000 a year.
If it's way less than $19,000, you shouldn't have any issues.
Unless you have post-surgical complications no it shouldn't be an issue. You should be aware the surgery to move excess skin would not be covered by the Canadian health system it would be considered cosmetic surgery. It is a very serious procedure that can leave you with malnourishment issues plus other longterm GI issues. Definitely something only to be considered after every other weight loss technique has been tried.

My bad, i failed to clarify that we are Indian citizen will get the surgery done in India only and will apply for Express entry/PNP after the surgery. Having bariatric surgery cause any issues in clearing Medical for PR?
