okay back story is my husband is American and we did civil marriage to start our sponsorship papers. next week, he's going to move here but as a visitor because we are doing outbound sponsorship so he can go visit his family whenever he wants without the fear of not being able to reenter Canada. My questions are... How long can he stay? also, we are having a big wedding in march. will that effect that? what do we tell the border people next week? we are leaving Canada for American thanks giving for 5 days in November.
He will be allowed to stay for as long as the border guard decides. if they say nothing & you get no stamp, you are assumed 6 months. Its best to be honest with them and never lie. For the wedding, tell them you are going to visit family/attend a wedding... dont hide anything, and there will be no problems!
Oh PS do not ever tell them you are "moving" there until you are legally allowed to do so. You are simply VISITING for x number of weeks.
Yes, just say you're "visiting" and don't cross the border with items of furniture, appliances, etc. Just bring what you would bring for a few weeks' stay. If they suspect he is moving, they may deny him entry.
He can just say he is staying until before Thanksgiving, and he wants to leave Canada to go spend it with his family.
When he enters again he can say he is staying until after his wedding - March will be within 6 months from November so it shouldn't be a big problem. He should, however, bring proof that there will be a wedding (invites, receipts for the venue, etc.) his marriage certificate, hotel reservations, etc.
When you come over this first time just tell them that he is staying until November 27th or whatever date you are going back. If you ask for six months now and then leave then whatever time they gave you originally will be void. From my experience and most I have read on here the IOs are pretty likely to work with you more because you are married. You should not have any issues unless you are bringing a moving van over or something lol. They also like to know that you are applying or have applied before they give you time. I dont know when you were planning on applying but having your husband medicals and background checks already done also really helps for smooth border crossings. Good luck!
