I'd like to sponsor her to become a canadian permanent resident. Would it better to marry in Brazil then have the marriage validated in canada or the opposite if the end goal is to have her living in canada as a resident?
Also, would she be required to stay in Canada for a length of time during the sponsorship process?
We married here in Canada--Its much easier than travelling to Brasil, then validating the marriage. Just get a JP to do it here.
If your applying as inland sponsorship YES, she is required to stay here. She will have implied status while the application is being processed. You can also apply for the open work permit at the same time as your PR application, and in a few months she can get work in most industries.
If you apply for outland, she will need to do her immigration correspondence with the Consulate in Brasil. Some of my friends applied outland, but the applicant used her visitors visa to reside in Canada while it was processed. In their case, he had her PR within 4 months which is amazing--but probably the exception, not the rule.
