Hi all, As I recently landed in Canada with PR status I'm thinking about getting my girlfriend here, what is the best option you suggest?

We've applied on IEC program so she can get 1 year work permit for start. However, if she's no selected I'm gonna need a backup plan.

Backup plan is marriage outside Canada and apply for sponsorship after. We're together less than 2 years, so it's small problem - she won't get PR status for first 2 years (info from CIC) - what she will get instead - work permit? Did someone go through this recently?

And second question: minimal income - on CIC for 2 person family is 38,000ish, lets say 40k - is it net or gross?

Appreciate any suggestions and have a good one

You've misunderstood two key rules:

1) She will in fact get PR and will be able to work like a PR.
2) There are no income requirements for spousal sponsorship.

cool, that's a good news, thanks :)

So basically she will get conditional PR and there is no minimum income cap for me?

One more thing - when we apply for sponsorship will she get open work permit for the time of application processing?

Only if you apply inland which has longer processing times. She also needs to be in Canada in order for you to sponsor her inland.

If she is outside of Canada, you will need to sponsor her outland - so no work permit.

Thanks :)

I checked online and they changed the processing times - it's 12 months for both inland and outland applications

so if she comes to Canada as a tourist (visa exempt country passport) I can apply for sponsorship and she will get permit once application is received, right?

Yes, that's right. It takes a little while to process the Open Work Permit application. A couple of months, I'm not sure if it's about 2 months or 4 months, It's processed and you receive within that time frame and then you just wait for the PR to continue processing.

First off, in the two years you have been together, have you lived together for over a year?

Secondly, your length of relationship will not stop her getting PR. Depending on timescales, she may initially be issued with conditional PR, which will automatically become full PR after two years (Government is intending to abolish the conditional phase).

Thirdly, there is no minimum income requirement for spouses.

good news, thanks :-)
