If your answer is "YES" to any of the questions, you should explain well, in such a way that the reviewing officer can understand it and no more question arises. If space is not sufficient, attach additional sheets as required.

I suggest:
Also justify your stance appropriately and try to persuade officer that you have learnt your lesson well after detention (If you committed crime intentionally) and also that time turned out to be a self realization phase for you.....and NOW you are clean by minimizing negative details (if any) with proper justification and maximizing the positive aspects...like you promised yourself not to commit again and was favored and appreciated for your attitude (if you were) and all.

Unfortunately, it's not just a simple matter of writing a letter to explain things. Depending on the crime and when this occurred, you may be deemed to be criminally inadmissable to Canada.
