that's the last part of the process. shouldn't take more than 3 months doesn't matter the vo. ottawa processes background checks in like 2-3 weeks but others vo's take 1 month 2 months even 3 months!
I want to knw the answer to this question soooo bad. Been a month after interview and waiting for background checks to be completed. Can anyone has any idea being pakistani applicant and having travel history to america and china, how long it will take for background checks?
They can take a looooong time. I'm waiting for my husband's background check and it'll be one year on April 16th. He's in Lebanon. How long have you been waiting for?

I have had an issue with the background checks taking soooo long too, but that was for a TRV (not a spousal sponsorship). I applied in May 2015 for a
multiple TRV and it took them until Feb 2016 to issue it (so almost 9 months) and they said the reason was in fact "Background Checks." I was surprised at how long it took them because I already had applied (and gotten) a
single TRV on many occasions before. I suppose that the process for a multiple TRV requires a more extensive background check than that of a single TRV.
Anyways, as for now, I mean for the spousal sponsorship, I have been on waiting since 20th of dec 2016. I know its not yet a long time but it help us plan if we were to know how long it would take.
Issue is that even CIC/Embassy will not (and I think cannot) tell you how long it takes. Thats why I was just hoping someone compiled some sort of an xls sheet for reference.

I don't know if that is entirely accurate because I am noticing that many applications (specially applicant from Middle Eastern VO's that have a Middle Eastern passports) take a lot more that you mentioned; in some cases up to 1 year! Are you suggesting that it takes 2-3 months from personal experience? Or did you get that information for CIC/VO?

There have been some who have had background checks take a few years, while some have had their checks done within a few weeks. It depends on so many different factors, big and small, which makes it extremely hard to find a baseline.
Few years???? even criminal trials in this country don't take that long. This is more of a due diligence issue that CIC has. If it takes few years I'm so sure they'd put aside your application to dust and try to cover their mistakes by praying you don't do anything about it. Bottomline: If it takes longer than your wait times you HAVE TO complain to your MP office.
And isn't it funny that they give us a very short due date for asking documentation (I know PCC from certain countries take months to get) But they can take their sweet times to do "background checks"

Actually, such extended checks generally result from delays in receiving information from the applicant's country or other countries where the applicant resided. Nothing to do with IRCC.

That makes sense. Ok followup question in that case:
Will the background check time frame be the same as that of an earlier multiple TRV I applied for? or is that information not relevant for spousal?

Yes ofc, you can complain. And believe me I tried with an earlier application (for a multiple TRV), but you dont really get any solid answers. I have learnt that its because CIC/Embassy does not
really know how long it will take. They usually forward the file to another authority to conduct specific background checks.

What is a TRV?

Temporary Resident Visa. It allows non-Canadians, and citizens of non-visa exempt countries to visit Canada.
