Hi! I need some help I have submitted an application under the spousal sponsorship leaving in Canada in 2012 may. My application is been under processing since 2012 October (step 2) I called CIC in January to check up on my application they said that they are just waiting on a security background check which means my application is at the last stage. My question is how long does it usually take for a background check? I am being told since January that it should be any day now... but I am getting frustrated now

Hi! I got approved for OWP and AIP in October 2013...

As per the GMCS notes that I requested my background check were completed last January 21.

So it took 2 and half months for me...

Mine was about the same - 2-3 months. So should be soon. It will depend of course on your background.

What exactly do they look for in the background check? just curious.

no idea but i would think they making sure there is no criminal record or any charges
or maybe if all the information you provided were true i really don`t know

my wife's been going on for a month now, I really hope it doesn't take long...

I think they are looking for anything that would link the person to illegal activity. So, not just criminal records, which is different than the backgournd check. But things like belonging to organizations that are a risk (terrorism, organised crime, etc); or past involvement in war crimes. Stuff like that.

That's crazy though, my wife is a 5 foot tall Mexican girl who lived in Mexico City all her life, lol. Nothing worrying for National Security there, hahaha
