Partner was just granted PR last week, he has been in Canada with me for 18 months. His auto insurer (GEICO) found out and dropped him yesterday. My auto insurance company cannot cover him legally till he formally 'imports' his vehicle at the border. We had planned to do that on Jan 30/17. But now.....with no insurance coverage whatsoever....how can we even drive the car to the border to have it formally imported?
Seriously, stuck in between a rock and a hard place. Has anyone ever experienced this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Uh oh. How did they find out? Lots of US insurers allow you to drive a car in Canada. I had Geico too and it wasn't a problem...
Try phoning or buying insurance online from another US insurer. I know Esurance offers US/Canada insurance. You don't need to say he's living in Canada, just say the car is in Canada while he visits. Not sure if that matters but better safe than sorry.

No Idea how they found out, but at the same time we weren't really trying to hide the fact. Total bummer. I feel like the car is in Auto Purgatory! Haha. It's a giant pain in the butt - realistically though, things could be much worse. Thank you for the suggestion of Esurance. I have a feeling I will be Google-ing all night!
