I am sponsoring my wife from Brazil and I would like to know if her passport foto copy needs to be authenticated. It is already in English and Portuguese so it wouldn’t need to be translated.

Also we are required to provide a foto copy of her National Identity Card. It is only in Portuguese. Will this need to be translated and authenticated?

Passport copy no unless they specify that it has to be. The identity card, do they ask for a copy of it? Unless the document checklist says to have it notarized and translated then the answer is also no.

They do ask for a copy of National Identity Cards. The checklists says ANY documents not in a English or French most be a certified translation. It doesn’t say specifically that they have to be authenticated prior been translated, but that’s usually implied doesn’t it?

I think all you need is the certified translation from the translator. IRCC specifies what is required, you can do it if you want to but I don't think it's required. I don't think they leave anything to be "implied", since they are dealing with so many different languages from around the world they have to be specific in what they want.

You need to check the country specific requirements. Some countries just certification and translation, some countries copies must be sourced from national authorities (don't know if that's considered authentication), etc.

If you mean specifically the apostille, generally Canada doesn't use them (not a party to the relevant treaty), but again - check the country requirements. Check also with Brazilian applicants who have been through this, either here or eg on Portuguese language forums.
