Applying for TD visa Canadian citizen minor

I'm reading conflicting information on whether a Canadian citizen minor needs to apply for TD or not. So the first time I entered on TN visa my child accompanied me and got a TD stamping in his passport. Now due to missing information, my TN got denied and I need to fly again so I want to leave my child at home with my spouse and fly alone and get new TN. But my child who is my TD dependent, would he be considered as out of status? or how much time do we have to apply for TD status, do we need to apply at all since he's a Canadian citizen?

Let's say I choose not to apply from within US but after a year or so we travel outside US and while returning just show my valid TN and all paperwork/proof needed, will that be okay for entry to US? Would the officer say he was out of status for all these months or let him enter?
