Applying for study permit with in Canada,do I need to send original passport

I have received my acceptance letter and plan to apply for my study permit with in Canada next week either online or through the mail. I had studied earlier and got my post grad work permit and have applied for the permanent residency so I need to submit my passport at the Indian embassy to get my police clearance certificate from india and it takes a month or so.

Will I need to submit my original passport when I apply for the study permit either online or in the mail with in Canada or just a copy.

If you are applying in Canada to Vegreville, then a copy of your passport.
