applying for bowp in a week before expired current visa

Hello,
I'm a CEC applicant with AOR 27MAY.
My closed work permit will be expired on 16Jan2021 and I'm thinking to apply for BOWP of course before then.
Is it Okay to apply in the first week of January? or Is it too late?
I just want to wait COPR as long as possible in this month but I'm worried applying late would be a risk.

I just applied for mine ~5 days before current permit expiry. All you need for implied status is to have the transmission confirmation (immediately arrives) before permit expiration.

a few days later I got a letter formally identifying that I have 4 months of implied status (i guess buying themselves the maximum time to process the bowp). I got this letter the day my wp expired but I think that's just a coincidence
