I am a permanent resident of Canada, and my PR card expired in October 2016. I submitted an application to renew it May 2016, however the CIC informed me that my application went for a secondreview and that the delays will be longer.
Anyway I was planning on going back home for the holidays in December, I bought my ticket at the beginning of the year and I can't change it
I read online and I found that a Permanent Resident can apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to be able to come back to Canada without a valid PR card.
I wanted to know if anyone here went through a similar situation and how did it go. What is the processing time to get the PRTD?

Hi there I am not an expert with PRTD but they aren't an automatic right, i.e. you don't just apply and they stamp your passport and of you go.
The consulate actually review your case. As it appears your PR has already gone to secondary review they will find this out when you go through the PRTD process it may take longer.
You can check the processing time for a PRTD in Lebanon by calling the relevant visa processing centre there.
So I applied for the PRTD on the 22nd of December 2016 and I got an email today saying that my passport is ready for pick-up at the Visa Office. It took a total of 8 business days.

From your experience, do you think that given the fact that I got my PRTD quickly means that there has been progress with my PR renewal process and that I might get it soon? Can one influence the other?

Update: I'm not sure if it has to with the succesfull application for the PRTD I did in back January 2017, but I got last week (February 21st) my new PR in the mail

The fact that your son is Canadian has no impact on your PRTD. You will have to explain why you couldn’t meet your RO and file a PRTD based on H&C reasons. Depending on your reasons and prof you provide you will either be approved or denied. If denied you will have a chance to appeal. If the appeal is negative you will lose your PR status.
