So, in 2014, I applied for and obtained a supervisa for my mother. She was given 2 years and when the time can around, we applied for an extension, which we got in the mail today... But instead of an extension on her supervisa, they issued a regular 6 month visitor visa (case 10 vs a case 06). Does this mean that she no longer has a supervisa or that they messed up and issued the wrong visa? Nothing has changed, her conditions (money, health, etc.) are all the same and she's from the U.S. (visa-exempt but the supervisa makes things much easier for us).
They have not messed up. They have not issued a wrong visa. Her super visa (stamped in her passport) is still valid (you'll have to check the expiry date). Regardless, she has now been issued a visitor record which means she can stay for another 6-months.
And for how long an extension is granted is entirely up to CIC
