Many people apply on their own, myself included. The process is relatively straightforward, so unless you think you have a complicated case, there's nothing wrong with applying on your own.

+ 65% applicantions are self done without the service of consultants.
If there are complications on your case then hiring an immigration lawyer will be good. A consultant is not an immigration lawyer.
