Any alternative to job role letter from ex-employer?

Is it mandatory to have an experience letter from employer (ex/present) mentioning job role/duties? i have release letter mentioning my designation, joining and release date from the company and that i have worked full time in the role. Getting the letter mentioning job roles and duties is difficult. is there any alternative to this?
