American Passport with Expired Canadian PR Card

I am currently awaiting for my new PR card. I am wondering if i travel to the USA by car and would like to return to Canada by plane. Am i able to travel with my US Passport since my PR is expired?

Agree with @scylla, but will add that you should NOT mention to the airline that you are a PR of Canada. Let them `assume' that you are visiting Canada. The vast majority of those holding a valid U.S. passport (without a valid PR Card) will have no problems.
