I have now established that when I make an investigative field trip holiday to Canada I will actually 'land' as an immigrant and become a Permanent Resident as I will have my visa by then. However as I will be coming back to the UK after this holiday I will give the postal address (for the PR card) of a friend, this friend will then forward my PR card to me in the UK. Am I able to leave Canada without the PR card, will the passport control question me on the way out of Canada? Then assuming I receive it in the post in the UK from my friend later I will return to Canada permanently with it later.
There is no passport control on the way out of Canada. The airline is reponsible for you having a passport to board the plane but they will not ask you for PR card. There should not be any problems.
