Advice needed on study permit extension

I just finished a 2 year masters program in environment studies but want to apply for study permit extension to take a PSW certificate program. Since the 2 programs are different, would it be a problem for my study permit extension to be granted? Do I need to write a letter if explanation with my application for why I am taking this new program? Anybody being in this show before and can advise?
