I am a Permanent Resident out of Canada at the time I received the letter requesting that I attend the citizenship ceremony along with my son whose application was submitted with mine as a minor.
I am able to return to Canada for the ceremony as my PR status is still valid, however, my son's PR card has expired over a year as he was attending school in the country of his birth. I need advice on how to get him to re-enter Canada so he can attend the citizenship ceremony and to complete the citizenship process.
What can you do? You can try to enter Canada and see what happens. If the officer gives you a hard time, you can try to ask for their compassion. Will it work? Who knows? If you don't have a travel document to enter Canada for your son, the airline probably wont let him travel though unless he has a visa exempt passport. Good Luck.

Did your son accumulate 2/5 years of residency in Canada prior to his departure? You can go to the Canadian embassy/consulate in the country where you are currently residing and apply for a one-time permanent resident re-entry visa, also known as a PRTD: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/travel-document/index.asp

It has to be two years of physical presence in the last five years counting back from today. Its unclear from the original post if the OP knows her son's actual PR status has lapsed.
