A question about study permit extension and TRV

I have completed my MSc from X university and going to start PhD from Y univeristy in another province. So, I applied for strudy permit extension for the PhD (my current TRV experies in 31st aug.). Unfortunately CIC only give 5 months extension (till january 27, 2017) while I applied for a 3 yr extension.

So my questions are: Is this natural? or there's some mistake in it? Should I call them about it?

Also, the point is, as I have no plan to travel outside Canada soon, I want to again apply for study permit extension in December for 3 years, (hopefully I will get it for atleast 1-2 year then) and then want to apply for TRV. As my TRV experies 31st aug, 2016 is there any problem I apply for TRV after getting my second study permit extension somewhere in January/february 2017? Please kindly suggest me what should be the best way? Thanks.

if ur passport is not expiring january 27, 2017 then u should call them see if it was a clerical mistake if not u will have to apply again i guess later on
