Does anyone know if the 6 month time limit for entry into Canada as a visitor is per visit, or per year (from the time of first entry).
I was under the impression that it is per visit, and the actual time allowed is at the discretion of the border official, but my girlfriend who is Canadian seems to think otherwise.

I thought it was so.
Basically I work on ships and have months of leave at a time, so would like to spend the vast majority of that over in Canada with my fiance (Getting married next month ) I can obviously prove that I have a job that pays me while i'm on leave and requires me to come back, so I can't see it causing a problem.

Really? I can see a lot of ease in just staying in Canada for good and not going back to the ship. Also it is clear there are no ties to your home/residence country, you can stay away from months and you are constantly out of it.
Be careful when you keep entering the country, your saying might very well be challenged.
