Hi everyone,

Hoping for some tax advice which I have searched the forums extensively for however we are in a unique situation:

-I am a Canadian citizen; worked and lived in Canada for 2019.
-My spouse (common-law), is self-employed in Thailand, but lived with me in Canada for approximately 9 months in 2019 on a VISITOR VISA. This was for approximately 3 months at a time.
-All of my spouse’s income is earned in Thailand.
-She applied for PR (outland) in July 2019, received COPR Dec 27, 2019 and LANDED on Jan 23, 2020.
-For the duration of 2019 my spouse received income in Thailand.

On my 2018 return:

-Marital status change reported (May 2018)
-Net Income Only reported for my spouse of $40K CAD (no seperae return filed for my spouse)
-Was your spouse a Canadian resident in 2018: No (Present in Canada for 1 month in 2018)
-Was your spouse an immigrants in 2018: No

My questions relate to filing my 2019 return:

1) Am I required to submit complete information for 2019 or is net income only sufficient?
1a)If I report net income only, do we need to file a tax return my spouse? In this case it likely makes sense to file complete information on mine.

2) Even though my spouse did not become a PR until 2020, I believe she would be a resident for tax purposes in 2019?

3) For the question: “was your spouse an immigrant in 2019?” Should I be answering yes or no? Again, she was here for approximately 3 months at a time on a VISITOR visa, but in Canada for about 9 months of 2019.

Thank you for your help!
