For the 2 references required, do the references need to be canadian citizens and/or living in Canada? I am asking this as I do not know many persons who are caandian citizens at this moment.
 
Thank you so much, I appreciate that. Does that mean that I can use a firnd of mine who lives in the US and who's known me for 15 years. And same for my wife, can she use a former classmate of hers who now lives in Singapore?

I would suggest to use references in Canada. There would be people who know you atleast for 2 yrs. In the end choice is yours.
