I'm currently pursuing a post-graduate program that takes between 1 to 2 years to complete. I chose the accelerated route to minimize the living expenses and get it over with as quickly as possible so that I can get back to working full-time.
I graduate next semester, but I'm worried about my PR. I know that for the 3 semesters I'm finishing my program in, I will receive a 1 year PGWP. I will also be applying for both PGWP and PR the day I receive a letter from my university (doing the IELTS this weekend).
The thing I'm worried about is my application taking too long (more than a year) to be approved, hence having to return back home then back to Canada once it's approved. The reason being is that I have a rental agreement that is signed, an apartment that is furnished and a car that I have to leave behind.

According to the CIC website, the average processing time for a PR application is around 6 months. Am I being too paranoid or is a 12 month PGWP plenty of time to get my PR sorted out?
I am taking almost 20 credits in my summer term, so there is a possibility of extending my program to a max of 16 months. Time is ticking though and the registration window closes next month, so would appreciate some insight on whether I should stick to my 12 month vs 16 month program?

FYI, all the international students in my program are completing it in 2 years or 20 months to take advantage of the 3 years PGWP, I'm literally the only doing it in a year since I'm mostly concerned with minimizing living expenses and graduating ASAP to start working full-time

Hi Mike,

How did you eventually resolve this? Did you go ahead with acceleration?

They gave me a 3 year PGWP even though I completed my program in 1 year. (started in August 2019, finished and applied for a PGWP in August 2020). PGWP issued for Nov 2023

Thanks Mike. Happy to hear it all worked out perfectly. I'm taking the exact path as you did (finishing a 2 yr course-based masters in 1 year) to minimize expenses too.

What documents did you provide, timeline for your review and any tips or pointers to smoothen the process? Thanks for the guidance.

My guess is that they go by the official program length which they issued your study permit under. Mine was for 2 years + an extra 3 months.

When I applied for the PGWP, I just gave them my transcript + a document from university stating that I have completed all my degree requirements and am waiting for the convocation to receive my diploma.

It took 3 months to get my PGWP, but that was because of the covid backlog. I think they're being processed in 45 days now
