Hi everyone,

I am a bit confused about Renewing my PR. Is your PR Status and PR Card separate or linked together?

For example, my PR card expires 1st April 2026 - is that when my PR status ends also, if I don't renew it?

Also, how early can I renew my PR status? If i have spent 2 years in Canada can I renew my PR card in April 2025 (a year before it expires).

Any feedback would help!

Your PR status is permanent, as the name suggests. Only the card expires. Not renewing it has no consequences on your status in Canada, but it will prevent you from boarding a plane (or other commercial carrier) to Canada. You may also face issues in certain scenarios where you need to prove your PR status in Canada, but if you are already well established, these will probably be limited.

You may only renew your PR card within 9 months of the expiry date of the old one.

Note that it is important you meet the residency obligation at the time of applying for renewal.

One caveat is that if you don’t meet your RO and leave Canada that can put your PR status at risk.
