There are 6 main stages in Citizenship Application;
1) Language Skills - your basic English/French proficiency
2) Physical presence - Days you were physically present in Canada to qualify for Citizenship application
3) Background Verification - Basically they check your history with databases from different countries to verify if you have had any criminal offences filed against you. Any confusion or conflicting information here may delay your application as this will trigger fingerprint requirement and further processing time.
4) Prohibitions - If there is anything else that may prevent you from becoming a citizen.
5) Citizenship Test - If all above is good, you'll be invited for the test on your knowledge of Canada.
6) Citizenship oath - Final stage. You take the oath and wait for the Citizenship certificate.
Background verification is one of the most important stages as this is what can make or break things for your application. If you clear this, you are almost through and its just the test & sometimes long wait time after this.
